Eye disease

For a simple eye complaint a lotion of salt water is all that is necessary.

Drop into the parrot's eyes at night, water which is quite salty, and in the morning rub the lids with vaseline or olive oil.

A weak alum solution is good where there is much inflammation. Some recommend sulphate of zinc, but we do not like to use such severe remedies as they are quite apt to cause blindness.

A solution of one-half teaspoonful powdered borax in a wineglassful of water was used by the New Orleans bird dealers as an eye wash. We have cured quite a number of parrots which were apparently blind by simply rubbing on a preparation called Bird Balm.
